Welcome to the website for the community of Skerray on the North Coast of Scotland.  This website is run by the Skerray Community Ownership Trust (S.C.O.T) and has the purposes of promoting the township and providing news of the proposed self ownership of the area by the people of the community.

Skerray is a small crofting community on the north coast of Sutherland, located on a rocky promontory between Tongue in the west and Bettyhill to the east. The housing in Skerray lies mostly along a loop of minor single track road north of the A836 Tongue to Bettyhill road. The name 'Skerray' is derived from the Gaelic name Sgeireadh: "sgeir" meaning  "rock in sea covered by spring tides".
There are 11 townships scattered across the Skerray Estate: Torrisdale, Achtoty, Lotts, Clashaidy, Clashclevan, Achnabat, Clashbuie, Tubeg, Modsary, Lamigo, Stathanbeg, Strathan, and the deserted village of Sleitel. There are two offshore islands: Island Naimh (Neave), The Priest's Island, close to Skerray harbour, and, one mile from the harbour, Island Roan, which was last inhabited in 1938.

The current Skerray population is 91 full-time residents in 46 households.
The estate has 65 crofts, with 31 crofting households and 43 crofters. 55 people are involved in crofting activity, including ploughing, bringing home peats etc for others

We are currently researching the possibility of a purchase of the land from Sutherland Estates, the current owners, and would welcome any input from interested parties.

We would particularily hope to hear from persons who might be directed involved with the move from Estate ownership to Community ownership (residents, regular visitors to area, people from neighbouring townships etc).
You can find details of how to get in touch on the Contacts page and the further news and topics that are under discussion relating to the buyout on the S.C.O.T page.
The Skerray Community Ownership Trust is now inviting residents to become members of the trust.  Suggestion boxes are in the Post Office and Village Hall, where an interest can be registered.  You can also
contact us through the website.
